Labor Day 2023

Hard to believe that it's already Labor Day.

Oh, we still have summer weather on the horizon, and summer ain't over 'til it's over in a few weeks. Still, Labor Day = summer's over.

But Labor Day is, of course, more than the end of summer. It's a day to honor workers - especially worker-workers: the folks who swing the hammers, deliver the goods, deliver the mail, deliver the people, wipe the butts, repair downed phone lines, pick the lettuce, empty the bedpans, fix the engines, pave the roads, wash the windows, clean the floors, bag the groceries.

Not that those who work at white collar professional jobs aren't workers.

But when I think of Labor Day, it's mostly the workers who take their shower at the end of the day, rather than at the beginning of he day, who come to mind.

That and labor unions, for whom Labor Day is a high holiday.

So hats of to the worker workers. And hats off to the unions. (Not to mention congratulations to the UPS drivers, and Teamster president Sean O'Brien - a local boy - for securing a strong contract without having to go out on strike.)

Happy Labor Day!
